The owners of Dickens Parlour Theatre, Rich and Sue Bloch, differ, even today, as to which of them was the more reluctant to chance a blind date in 1960, arranged by their families and friends. (They agreed to start the evening at 10:00 p.m.: Sue was a cheerleader and didn’t want to be seen at the basketball game with a geek that night. Rich had a date earlier in the evening.)

Rich was knocked out by the new acquaintance. He told his Mom he intended to marry Sue. The record supports the conclusion that Sue was, perhaps, less impressed at the time. According to her diary, she “met a nice guy tonight – Rich BLACK.”

After a college courtship, they were married in 1966. Rich hadn’t told Sue of his life-long romance with Magic: That was a secret that saw the light of day after their two kids were born. Over the years, Rich earned a bachelor’s degree at Dartmouth, and an MBA and Law Degree at the University of Michigan. Sue graduated from Smith College. Then, while at Michigan, Sue collected a Masters in Math. And another Masters and PHc in Computer Science. And a Law Degree. It follows, therefore, (doesn’t it?) that they would start a Magic Theatre.

By converting an oversized garage, Rich and Sue were able to open Dickens Parlour Theatre in 2010. Rich put his arm on his Magic friends he had met on cruise ships and stages around the world. Sue, for her part, would (and still does) shed the academic robes of her position as Prof. of Constitutional Law at Georgetown Law Center to appear with Rich as the inimitable “Miss Direction”.

Rich and Sue are delighted to have you join us to enjoy the vision that realizes the fun, camaraderie, mystery and joy that Dickens Parlour Theatre is all about. WELCOME!
